How to build paths from artificial materials on your garden area.

Sometimes unimportant small details completely change the way something looks as a whole. So trivial paths in your garden area can totally change its appearance and highlight host’s individuality. A typical path can visually divide the territory into the vegetable plot and the leisure area at the same time combining them into a whole. The peculiarity of patterns formed by the paths is obtained by combining linear, geometrically-balanced style with free-form style, but in any case paths network should be thought out in every detail – from their placement to dimensions, especially if the garden area is small. Designers advise avoid right angles when building the paths – it is more elegant and comfortable if the path has a smooth turn.

How to make paths properly.

If people regularly move between point A and point B, it definitely must be a path between these points. As a rule, there are more than two or three such points, so a whole “net of paths and trails” is needed here.

Paths in a garden, apart from their main function, almost always perform decorative function, therefore their type and appearance should be directly tied to the style of a garden, which you choose.

The width of paths depends on their purpose: main “highways” – 1-1.5 m, less important – 0.5-1 m, and trails between plantings (if you are not a follower of Mittleider) – not more than 0.5 m.

Let’s get started with a fence. Just think what you like: a delicate hedge or a fence separating you from the outer world. In these two cases the best choice will be an availability of plants of various species. An evergreen cypress, yew, juniper, thuja will be the most suitable for a high hedge. For a small hedge a barberry will be ideal. Due to these wonderful plants on these six Ares one may set a beautiful place or to enclose a meadow. In the case your plot appears to be on a hill, one may lay out a rock-garden.
